8 alfresco cinemas for movie magic under the stars

agosto 26th, 2020

While most forms of live entertainment have fallen foul of the pandemic this year, there is one that can be more suited to the summer of social distancing. From drive-in movie theaters to alfresco film-watching, KATIE BERRINGTON zooms in on some of the world’s best outdoor cinemas

Soneva Fushi, Maldives

Settings don’t come more spectacular than at the Maldivian resort of Soneva Fushi, which hosts screenings of masterpiece movies in befittingly alluring conditions. Sound-tracked by crashing waves and rustling palms, the soft lounge seating is the perfect place to soak up both the scenery and delights of the big screen – and are all the better enjoyed with the vast array of ice-cream flavors on offer.

Open Air Cinema Kamari, Santorini, Greece

In the vibrant coastal town of Kamari in south-east Santorini, this traditional Grecian garden projects films onto a state-of-the-art screen in lush surroundings. Locals and visitors alike come to Cinema Kamari to enjoy the show and the alfresco bar, which serves a selection of local wines.

Six Senses, worldwide

As if the majestic Six Senses required more of a pull to draw guests to its global resorts, the Cinema Paradiso experience is not to be missed. With idyllic beachscapes as the backdrop, illuminated by the twinkling night sky, it isn’t hard to feel like the star of your own movie as you settle in to the front row to watch one of your favorites.

Luna Cinema, UK

Projected against suitably dramatic venues across the UK – from palaces and parks to historic castles and manors – Luna Cinema’s open-air screenings boast a brilliant line-up of movies. But, for 2020, the locations have been updated to adhere to social-distancing guidelines, with pre-laid-out pitches for all guests.

Secret Cinema, West Sussex, UK

The legendary immersive movie experience has transformed itself into a contemporary twist on a traditional drive-in for 2020. Still promising to deliver the true theatrics of film, set in the cinematic grounds of the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex, Secret Cinema’s program includes recent box-office blockbusters alongside cult classics.

Sotto le Stelle, Bologna, Italy

With the name Sotto le Stelle, which translates as ‘under the stars’, the cinema that pops up each summer in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore is unsurprisingly magical. It shows both modern and classic late-night movies throughout the season, but also plays host to the annual Il Cinema Ritrovato, a festival dedicated to the thrilling history of cinema, at the end of every August. This year it has adapted its program and expanded its use of venues for social-distancing precautions.
